The principal character, Jeff, is haunted by a dragon called Damien. Since the dragon does not reveal itself to anyone else, this haunting could be mental illness. The dragon accompanies Jeff for a period in his life over one winter in a depressed Lancashire milltown, increasingly bending reality to achieve what? As Damien says in their first encounter "Our business is minor dissatisfaction to outright chaos."
