Richard Saunders - Surrealist

The Source

Richard has been painting and drawing as long as he can remember. He has exhibited in various mixed and one man shows, including the Mall Galleries and Congress House, and exhibited since the 1960's in his home town at the Hertford Art Society's shows. He has works in many private collections, including that of the Duke of Bedford. In an exhibition catalogue preface in 1974 he wrote the following, which as a statement of principles he stands by to the present day.
'These works have been produced by a man in a trap. The same trap in which everyone exists. The trap of his short life span, the trap of his instincts, the trap of his emotions, and the trap of rituals and taboos. These paintings are for him, an escape. No pretentious preface to this catalogue could really give a better excuse. He paints them, you see them. You understand, or you do not'.
